KU Freshman Jamari Traylor Developing Hustle Reputation Against Morris Twins

Jul 28, 2011 10:55 AM

Jamari Traylor has split his time between summer school classes and in the Kansas practice facility where he is working out against the likes of Marcus and Markieff Morris.

“For the most part, I’m in the gym with the twins. They are here all the time,” Traylor said Wednesday in Allen Fieldhouse.

“Thomas (Robinson) is in here all the time. Cole (Aldrich) is in here, too. Anytime I get a chance to watch them, I will try to steal a couple moves here and there.

“It is really helpful playing against guys who have accomplished things like Cole and the twins,” Traylor added. “Those guys really made a name for themselves in the Big 12. I look forward to playing here and hopefully I can do the same as well.”

Traylor is developing a reputation as a player who constantly hustles.

“His motor is similar to Thomas Robinson,” KU coach Bill Self said. “He’s an inner-city, tough Chicago kid that has bounce. He wants to be good. We think he’ll be an immediate and major contributor for us.”

“I played football growing up (in Chicago). It’s probably why I got so tough,” Traylor said. “I get a couple nicks and scratches everywhere,” he added, showing off a nicked-up forearm. “I try to play as hard as I can all the time. I just know I’ve got to work hard for everything I’ve got. Every time I’m out there, I give it my all.”

Traylor is ranked No. 141 in the Class of 2011.

“I don’t think I have to prove anything to myself,” he said, “but as far as everyone else, I think I do. I think I was ranked pretty low, but it is what it is. I started playing basketball really late (sophomore year of high school) so I probably didn’t give everyone a good chance to look at me. I’ll show ’em what I’ve got this year.”

KU's Self Against NBA's Age Limit

Jul 6, 2011 10:26 AM

If Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self had his way, the NBA’s next collective bargaining agreement would include an alteration of the so-called “one-and-done rule.”

“I’d say leave (for NBA) out of high school or stay three years in college,” said Self, who would settle for a two-year minimum stay on campus for those who don’t declare for the draft following high school graduation.

“I don’t like what is in place now. It’s not because we’ve had two one-and-dones the last two years. Some people have had more. I don’t think what we have is fair to the kid. We say, ‘Come here to get a degree and help us win, and in turn, when the time is right, we’ll support any decision you make.’ That’s what we’ll say whether it’s one year or two years. The mind-set some kids have coming in is they can be a one-and-done guy. I can understand that. It’s the landscape of where we live and what we do, but it’s not the way it should be.

“It should be kids go to school first, and after they go to school and the time is right, they should be able to jump. I think making them stay a minimum of two would definitely help that cause.”
